ABOUT US

The Marine Teachers Association of New South Wales Incorporated (MTANSW Inc) is an organised body of practising marine teachers employed by registered teaching authorities in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. It is an active and effective support group of dedicated educators committed to teaching the principles of sustainable use and management of the marine environment to secondary school students throughout NSW and the ACT.

The Marine Teachers' Association of NSW formed 22nd September 1996 aims to:

  • support its members in the delivery of marine based programs in schools
  • promote, develop and publicise all aspects of marine teaching in NSW schools
  • encourage classroom marine teachers to play an active role in their professional development
  • foster links with other organisations interested in marine education
  • develop useful policy documents from time to time that will assist in the smooth running of the subject in schools
  • by means of general meetings, conferences, regional branches and a newsletter, disseminate and exchange information and ideas amongst those concerned with marine teaching
  • through its branches, conduct regional events to promote safety and sustainable environmental practice in the sea
  • encourage and support other events such as National Water Week, Ocean Day, World Environment Day and Seaweek
  • mentor new marine teachers into the profession

The MTANSW Inc is an active member of the New South Wales Professional Teachers Council and the National Australian Marine Education Alliance. It is affiliated with the Marine Teachers Association of Queensland (MTAQ) and the Marine Educators Society of Australia (MESA).

The Association plays a vital role in curriculum development, the professional advancement of teachers, and the production of resources for their students. MTANSW also represents their views to the Board of Studies, the relevant education authorities and the New South Wales and Federal Governments.

MTANSW Inc is organised, operated and administered by full time teachers on a voluntary basis. Its day to day ‘functions’ are performed through an effective Management Committee spread throughout NSW and ACT secondary schools.
